The Christchurch Adventure Park has been recognised as among the most safe and sustainable tourism businesses in the country by New Zealand tourism’s quality assurance organisation, Qualmark.
Christchurch Adventure Park General Manager, Anne Newman, says the organisation is thrilled to receive a Silver Sustainable Tourism Business Award on its first application for Qualmark accreditation.
“Qualmark is well recognised in New Zealand as a mark of quality in the tourism sector, so it was important to us to go through this independent review of our business and benchmark what we are doing against other tourism operators around the country. To achieve Silver status in our first application, and particularly after being closed for ten months following the Port Hills fires, is testament to our excellent staff and the passion and commitment they pour into this Park.”
Businesses are assessed against various criteria in four key areas: Health and Safety; Environment; Social/People; and Economic. According to Qualmark: A Silver award is evidence of a sophisticated tourism business that consistently exceeds visitor expectations. Proactive leadership and management ensure that a culture of high performance is evident throughout the entire business. The business will have a real focus on continuously improving their economic, social and environmental performance to ensure the tourism product they deliver is a genuine, constantly improving sustainable experience.
Ms Newman says the accreditation process has been a valuable exercise for the business, particularly in terms of identifying small changes that could go a long way to making the Christchurch Adventure Park an even more environmentally sustainable operation.
“To achieve Qualmark accreditation you must go through a comprehensive review of all facets of the business, so this has been a useful opportunity for us to take a fresh look at how we do things and what we could improve. We are very proud to have got this Adventure Park back up and running, and to be back to the same trail capacity as we had pre-fires. There are so many more exciting developments still to come and I am sure that this will all help to put us in contention for the top Gold award in the future,” Ms Newman said.
