Community Update
Logging Operations and Fire Preparedness
Following the recent flare-up at the slash pile from logging activity, there has been a lot of public interest in what's happening on site. We want to update our community on where we are with our fire season preparation.
First and foremost, thank you to everyone who has written in, voiced concern and called FENZ. As always: if you see something, say something, do something.
What's happening with the slash pile
CAP is working closely with the landowner, their contracted logging company and FENZ to make sure all appropriate slash risk management practices are being put in place. This is still an active forestry worksite, and the recent steam and flare-up show that the pile is not in a suitable long-term state. The logging contractor is taking immediate action to reduce the fire risk. Once logging is complete, FENZ will return to inspect the site and assess its long-term condition and risk.
Action plan
FENZ's risk reduction group has been engaged to work with the landowner's logging contractor on a proactive and achievable way forward. In places the slash is over 3m deep, which has caused the recent steam and smoke activity. The contractor is now on site, removing the slash and spreading it across the dirt processing area. This will allow it to break down naturally and lower the likelihood of self-combustion.
While this work is under way, you may see steam rising from the area during operating hours, much like a compost pile, as the material is pulled apart and watered down. FENZ and CAP are confident this approach will significantly reduce our exposure.
CAP's own fire plan
These events have reminded us of our exposure to fire and the nervousness it creates in our community. CAP has independently engaged FENZ's risk management group to audit our fire preparedness, including planning for a potentially dry summer.
CAP is now open seven days a week, so we have eyes on the park every day during operating hours. Our team is fully briefed on our fire plan, fire-ready and watching closely so we can respond quickly.
Our number one goal is to ensure we can all keep enjoying the escape the forest provides at Christchurch Adventure Park. It's a special place.
Please keep an eye on the hills, continue to report any suspicious fire-related activity, and we hope to see you all in the village soon!
