Cashmere High School has claimed another victory on the final day of the Cycling New Zealand Schools National Mountain Bike Championships as Roisin McGuiness defended her senior female downhill title.
McGuiness won downhill gold at the Christchurch Adventure Park on Thursday, repeating her victory from last year in Blenheim. The under-17 female rider finished with 3:14.59 on Thursday.
Under-16 female winner Capella Martin of Kuranui College followed McGuiness in the overall rankings with 3:37.95.
Cashmere’s Winni Goldsbury, who finished top of the field in the female under-20s, was third overall with 3:42.83.
Under-17 male Jonty Williamson (2:55.78), of Palmerston North Boys’ High School, won the male downhill title - while last year’s winner Malik Boatwright (2:56.20), of Christchurch Boys’ High, finished second by the narrowest of margins over u-20 male winner Erik Cassels-Brown (2:56.94), of Cashmere.
Rounding out the senior downhill action, Baxter Surrey from New Plymouth Boys’ High School led the pack in the male under-16s with 2:59.94. Close behind was Luca Arthur from Cashmere High, who clocked in at 3:00.20.
Cashmere capped off a successful championship by winning the top senior school title, followed by Christchurch Boys’ High School and Nelson College for Girls.
Meanwhile, the top three junior schools were Nelson, Mokoia and Bohally Intermediates.
Christchurch Adventure Park Events Manager George Chapman hails the success of the past four days, which has seen more than 650 talented riders descend on Ōtautahi.
“It has been really, really rewarding,” he says. “Everyone’s been positive.
“It’s the first time we’ve hosted this event and we look forward to doing it again.”
