Forestry Work 2025
We want to inform you that some significant forestry works is set to shortly begin within a section of our property.
Here is what you need to know;
Location: 65ha of 7 year old pine that was significantly burnt during the 2024 Port Hills Fire on the western side of the property around Throw the Goat, Yoda, The Green, Bako Run and the Uphill.
As the forestry owner, McVicar Holdings is leading the forestry project alongside Laurie Forestry and HMR Contracting. Please note this is not a CAP project.
Current Status: Work is scheduled to begin on April 15th. Works are expected to take around 6 weeks to complete.
Process: 2-3 excavators will be mulching the 7 year old pine and surrounding vegetation back to ground level. Some areas will be too difficult to access via machine and will be manually worked by hand.
Reason for Works: Following the 2024 Port Hills fire the young 7 year old pine have been significantly damaged. Although some trees appear to be healthy the trees have stopped growing and the root plates have begun rotting / decaying – much of the 65ha is now in a position to fall over when pushed by hand and this creates a hazard now and into the future. During recent wind events up to 30 trees have been falling on operational tracks at the Park.
Impact on Trails: Throw the Goat, Yoda, The Green, Bako Run and the Uphill will have machinery working in close proximity of the tracks. Track closures will be in place at intermittent times during the 6 week working window. Our goal is to have machinery working around our tracks outside of operational hours, on closed days to allow the tracks to be open to public.
Adhering to Closures: As always when trails are closed it is important the public respect these closures – they are in place for both public and contractor safety. Anyone caught within closed areas during the areas during the forestry project will lose Christchurch Adventure Park access & privileges.
Replanting: The 65ha will be replanted this winter with pine, redwood or douglas fur. This is a decision made by McVicar Holdings.
